CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

FEED AND WATER FOR ALL

The rushing waters of the brook were ice cold, so Wilder’s hands were numb by the time he got a pair of the waterskins filled. Fingers tingling, he wiped them dry and then stuck them under his armpits for a minute to warm them up.

Once Wilder got feeling back in them again, he hauled the water back up to the summit. He was greeted by the pleasant scent of wood smoke.

A pair of griffins each relaxed atop a flat rock roughly the size of an extra-large sofa. They silently watched Shafiri attend to the campfire she had built in the wide, sandy hollow between the summit’s boulders.

Ever efficient, Shafiri had laid out a blanket and two pillows next to each other. What’s more, she’d set up the cooking gear to work with as soon as the firewood turned to glowing coals. She hummed a tune to herself, only stopping and looking up as Wilder approached.

“Special delivery from the local brook,” he joked as he held up the heavy bags. “Did someone up here order the water?”

“I’ve got what we need right now,” Shafiri replied. “But your delivery skills shall not be wasted! If you could hang them on the griffin’s watering holders, that would be much appreciated.”

Initially, Wilder wasn’t sure what she was referring to. But he figured it out as soon as he brought the first bag over to Sativa. Shafiri had unfolded a small wooden frame that let Wilder hang the water bag in such a way that the top remained open so that a thirsty griffin could stick their beak in.

Sativa purred with happiness as she did just that, slurping up the water with the gusto of a thirsty waterbird. Wilder repeated the procedure for Tiam, though the bigger griffin didn’t drink at first. Instead, she eyed him with a cool, suspicious air.

That look Tiam gave reminded me of that state trooper who pulled me over for speeding, Wilder thought to himself. I suppose that’s because I have some of Bucky’s scent on me. I better make sure that she makes the distinction.

For a second, his mind flashed back to his Tally Sheet. On it, his magical and near-magical abilities had been spelled out explicitly.

Individual-Specific Specialties: Animal Handling, Expert. Veterinary Science, Advanced. Beast Empathy, Advanced. Facilities Management, Advanced. Wilderness Survival, Basic.

No, I don’t want to dip into magic right now, he decided. That’s the temptation in this world, to do everything with it. That’s a damn good way to get soft.

Instead, he fell back on his tried and true animal techniques. Though Tiam was a strange, magical combination of eagle and lion, he approached her the way he would an uncertain dog.

Taking care to move slowly, he squatted and then turned slightly sideways to look less threatening. He avoided staring at Tiam’s big golden eyes and spoke in his calm, ‘easy girl’ voice he used for skittish horses.

“There you go, big girl,” Wilder said warmly. “You know that I’m Shafiri’s friend. And that makes me a friend to all griffins, to boot.
